There is a furious outcry coming from the right in Canada about the appointment of Henry Morgentaler to the Order of Canada. I was listening to CBC this morning and heard a rep from REAL Women Canada (press release) who was arguing that this was the death blow to the credibility of the Order because it “has become a political tool to promote the left-wing agenda”. This is the same Order that has admitted prominent conservatives like local boy Preston Manning and Brian Mulroney.
I think the appointment of Morgentaler says a lot of good things about Canada and that a man who actually put his life on the line and fought hard for the rights of Canadians should be honoured. The REAL Women of Canada argue that the Order only promotes the values of the “left” but I would argue that Morgentaler’s appointment reflects the majority of Canadians and their values. They should check out this poll from Leger Marketing and maybe get out and talk to real Canadians. Seems to me that a belief in Human rights is a Canadian value.
Update: Looks like there is some more evidence that a majority of Canadians support Morgentaler’s Order of Canada appointment.
From the article:
“The survey, conducted exclusively for Canwest News Service and Global National, showed 65 per cent of Canadians favour awarding the high honour to the Toronto abortion doctor, while 35 per cent are against it.”
Two-thirds support is very solid,” John Wright, senior vice president of the polling firm Ipsos Reid, which surveyed 1,023 adults from July 4-7. “You’re not going to do much better than that.”
…
“Despite Prime Minister Harper’s personal dissatisfaction with this decision . . . it appears that he is in the minority,” a news release on the poll said.”
